Sliding or stacking doors: finding the right opening

A generous opening changes how a room connects with the outdoors.

Architectural concept illustration

A simple sliding system

Sliding doors move along tracks without swinging into the room. The available opening depends on the number of panels and how they are arranged; part of the glazed area generally remains covered by parked panels.

A wider connection

Stacking doors use multiple panels that slide behind one another. They can create a larger opening relative to the overall width, although the parked panels, tracks and wall configuration need space and careful planning.

Details that shape the result

Consider furniture placement, threshold requirements, insect screens, ventilation and how the doors will be used each day. Frame finish, glass selection and exposure to coastal conditions also matter.

Plan around your home

Opening sizes and performance depend on the chosen system and installation. Discuss your plans early so the frame, structural opening and surrounding finishes can be considered together.
